Carefree and Cave Creek / Overview and Homes
News Flash: In the May, 2006 issue of Phoenix Magazine, Carefree ranked 2nd, and Cave Creek ranked 3rd, out of 22 municipalities ranked in the Phoenix Metroplex. (ranking based on home prices, crime rates, tax rates, 10th grade reading and math test scores, student / teacher ratios, and other "quality of life" factors)
If you're looking for someplace a little quieter, a little "farther out," a little closer to the desert, then discover Carefree and Cave Creek. These towns are located in the far northeast part of the Valley of the Sun, adjacent to North Phoenix and North Scottsdale.
Looking for your Arizona Dream House? You can find it in Carefree and Cave Creek. Both offer a wide variety of housing choices. You can find single family homes (some fixer-uppers, some new construction), new condos and townhouses, and multi-million dollar mansions nestled in the desert foothills. And, at elevations of 2500 feet (Carefree) and 2200 feet (Cave Creek), temperatures can run 10-15 degrees cooler than in the city.
Carefree is small, only 8 square miles, and has only 3300 residents (although in the winter the number of residents more than doubles.) Take a walk through the Town Center, which features the 3rd largest working Sundial in the Western Hemisphere (it's 90 feet in diameter!) Or enjoy the many art galleries, unique restaurants, and the Moroccan-style El Pedregal marketplace. The Carefree Fine Art and Wine Festivals take place three times each year (November, January, and March). Carefree also features The Boulders, which is one of the premier residential / golf / resort communities in the Phoenix Metroplex.
Cave Creek is larger, about 21 square miles, and has about 4500 residents. Its uniqueness comes from its roots as a frontier town. The Horny Toad and Crazy Ed's Satisfied Frog are two of the "Western Style" restaurants in the Town Center. Cave Creek holds its Wild West Days in November, and its Fiesta Day Parade and Rodeo in April.
If Golf is your game, then Carefree and Cave Creek offer plenty of options. Carefree is a long iron (okay, a short drive) from many of the fine courses in North Scottsdale (Desert Mountain, Mirabel, Desert Forest), and the Rancho Manana course is in Cave Creek.
